Beruflicher Werdegang

Dr. Joana Vassilopoulou is a Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management at the University of Sussex, School of Business, Management and Economics. Her background is in sociology, with a focus on culture and communication. During her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Germany, Dr Vassilopoulou was involved in several research projects, such as the project “The role of social proximity for the integration of ethnic minority families” at the DJI (German Youth Institute), Munich, Germany (the German Youth Institute is Germany’s largest non-university research institute devoted to the study of children, youth, and families). After her studies in Germany Dr Vassilopoulou worked as a Research Associate and lecturer at the Faculty of Social Science, University Duisburg-Essen. In her role as Research Associate she worked on a project titled “Diversity, discrimination and anti-discrimination in Germany” for the Ministry of Public Health, Social Welfare, Woman and Family of North Rhine-Westphalia. Dr Vassilopoulou was responsible for the development of the research methodology and she wrote five chapters for the final research report. The chapters examined the state of research as well as research gaps for Germany in following areas: discrimination, anti-discrimination, diversity management, gender inequalities, and the discrimination of ethnic minorities. In addition to her academic work Joana also worked as a Gender and Diversity trainer at the Department for Gender Equality for the Protestant Church in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

During her doctoral study at Norwich Business School, University of East Anglia, her work focused on why organisations in Germany are holding back to manage ethnic diversity. In this regard her study was concerned with race discrimination at work, race equality and diversity management. Also during her doctoral study, she worked in a research project commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), investigating Global talent management in emerging economies.

Her current research activities consist of two research projects. The first project is titled: Movers and shakers of talent management in the UAE for 21st century, funded by the FDC (Federal Demographic Council, United Arab Emirates). The second project is titled: How to retain talent? Understanding employment experiences of highly skilled ethnic minority Turks in Germany. This project aims to explore the life and work experiences of highly skilled ethnic minority Turks who left Germany and now work in Turkey.

She has published in edited collections and journals such as the European Journal of Industrial Relations, International Business Review and the International Journal of Human Resource Management. Her research interests include the management of ethnic diversity, discrimination at work, race and racism, immigration and integration in Europe, gender and race inequalities at work, talent management, global diversity management and social and organisational change.
