Dr. Pauline Hanesworth:
Embedding equality and diversity in the curriculum: a staff development programme for Scottish universities

The Embedding Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum (EEDC) project has been funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) since 2010 to offer support to Scottish universities in the context of the increasing diversity of the student body and strengthening of legislative duties to proactively promote equality, eliminate discrimination and foster good relations. All of this calls for a re-examination of the management, design and delivery of learning, teaching and assessment so as to incorporate (rather than add on) equality and diversity.

This talk and subsequent discussion will introduce the framework, model and theory developed as part of this project for use in staff development activities. It will explore how these can be – and have been – utilised in Scottish universities, the peculiarities of the Scottish context, the practical impact of the project’s work, the case studies formed and the challenges that have been faced. It will encourage the audience to consider the applicability of the framework and model to their own context and also to explore the project’s recommendations. Audience suggestions and expertise will be utilised in the shaping of the next iteration of the project’s work.
